Clear turquoise Lake Michigan water over a sandy bottom along the beach below the cottage

Your own way down to Lake Michigan

The best part of Wind-n-Wood is what's at the bottom of the yard. A private stairway winds through the cedars to a long sand beach and clear Lake Michigan water, shallow and turquoise near shore, deep blue beyond.

Spend the whole day down there. Swim and wade in the sandy shallows, launch a kayak or paddleboard on calm mornings, walk the shoreline hunting for Petoskey stones and beach glass, and come back down in the evening for a fire-lit end to the day by the water.

Private beach access from the property by a wooden stairway. Bring or rent your own kayaks and paddleboards.

Things to do on the Leelanau Peninsula

Wind-n-Wood sits near the tip of the peninsula, minutes from Northport, Leland and Suttons Bay. Spend your days on the water, among the vineyards, and on some of the prettiest bike routes in Michigan.

Life on Lake Michigan

Swim, wade and float off your own beach. On calm days the water is glassy and clear enough to see the stones on the bottom, perfect for kayaks and paddleboards. Charter fishing and sailing go out from the nearby harbors.

Wine tasting

The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail winds through rolling vineyards and tasting rooms known for Riesling, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. Pick a few wineries for a slow afternoon, with a designated driver or a hired tour.

Biking

The paved Leelanau Trail rail-trail runs from Suttons Bay toward Traverse City through orchards and farmland. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail follows the national lakeshore past dunes and forest, and quiet back roads link the villages.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is an easy day trip, with the Dune Climb, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and sweeping views from the bluffs high above Lake Michigan.

Lighthouse and state park

At the very tip of the peninsula, Leelanau State Park is home to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, quiet trails and rocky beaches looking out over the lake and bay.

Leland and Fishtown

Wander the weathered fishing shanties of historic Fishtown on the Leland River, pick up smoked fish, and catch the ferry to the Manitou Islands for a day of hiking.

Harbor towns

Northport's marina and village are close by. Suttons Bay has a walkable main street on Grand Traverse Bay with galleries, restaurants and a classic small-town movie theater.

Farms, orchards and food

Summer brings cherries and farm stands, fall brings apples, cider and color across the hills. Traverse City's restaurants and shops are within driving distance for a night out.

Good to know

The whole cottage is yours, apart from the basement and a few storage closets.

Self check-in with a smart lock and a private entrance.
